At my University, which shall remain nameless (PU), I have noticed a lot of cheating going on. Now while this is entirely up to the individuals involved, I think it lessons the quality of the degree I will get when I graduate.

When these people graduate, they will be idiots and not be able to do anything without someone else helping them. If they do get a job on their own, without family help, their employer will probably think they are complete morons and fire them because they are worthless. The employer will ask, "where did you go to school?". From now on, this employer will assume all people from this university will be slightly more intelligent than a rock and not hire anyone from there anymore.

From what I can see, there are no real repercussions from getting caught cheating because teachers don't do anything. In fact, some look and turn the other way to act like they don't see it. So, that makes the teachers partly to blame for the behavior of these students.

One student caught cheating when asked why they did it said, "it's ok, everyone is doing it."

My message to him is just because everyone is doing it does not make it right. Stop cheating!

The major problems in the world can probably be traced back to behavior such as this in it's rawest form.

It is definitely a real problem. We've all seen it happen, and I'll say 'we' are the other students in the exam room who are not even paying attention to other students, while the proctors who are there for the sole reason of catching cheaters constantly fail to do this. It's unfair to the students who spend hours and maybe even days studying for certain tests, and end up with lower scores than the slackers and cheaters who really don't even deserve credit for genius cheating methods. I remember one occasion where one girl was caught, I think the regulations specifically state that she would fail that test, that course, and all other courses that semester, and then "we'll see" kind of deal. But nope, turns out she's pretty, and got a bunch of other students to sign some stupid petition to save her ass. Now the rest of us will be graduating, knowing that our degree is worth jack shit, thanks to our beloved con artists...

every work experience I've had has led me to believe more that it is the possession of highly-developed demonstrable skills that employers look for- in my working life, I've compiled a fairly large portfolio of things that I've done to demonstrate my competence in certain areas, and have gotten references from former employers, etc. this has always helped me to get work, without a diploma of any kind- I never officially graduated from high school, I took the "good enough degree" (GED) instead. \n that said, I really think the cheaters *are* being punished because they *can't* demonstrate the skills that they don't have. does this lessen the quality of the degree you've gotten? no, it only lessens the prestiege associated with it- not a particularly big deal most of the time (although I'll admit it can be sometimes). if you didn't cheat, that means you've still learned all the lessons the hard way, and even if you got a bad grade, you know you can do it and probably have a good idea how to do more besides just that as a result of the lessons.

when all's said and done, you have to remember that there are many people out there who have built astonishingly successful careers who never completed their degrees- two examples off the top of my head are Steve Jobs and Bill Gates (although Bill did get an honorary diploma from harvard, if I remember- well after he had written the famous and infamous windows). most of us probably know somebody who's built a successful career who never went to college, but simply didn't waste his/her time and built the skill set they needed to succeed. This, to me, seems more important in the long run than worrying about what somebody who was too stupid or lazy or unmotivated to pass did to get around that fact.

Not at every job will you have the chance to just show how much good work you've done in the past. I've seen and participated from both ends the process of hiring new people. First thing that get's looked at are your credentials. In this day and age it's a basic requirement to have at least a bachelor's degree, and because some companies receive handfuls of resumes per day, they develop a kind of screening process, and without a diploma yours will just get tossed in the bin while others actually get a chance to come in and show-and-tell. Naturally this applies to employees. On the other hand, if you're the one hiring people, hell with college right?
