Google Maps Navigator
Posted by: Ralph van den Berg (28 October, 2009)
It was only a matter of time when Google would inch it's way into that market. They already had Google Maps in which you could plan a route, and now it's coming to your android phone. Now I know why that Garmin GPS store has disappeared from the map.
Check the video for a preview of what's possible.
Note the wonderful union between satellite images, street view, and straight up maps. The best point in my opinion is the fact that P.O.I. (points of interest) are pulled from the cloud, as are the maps themselves. This removes the need for "map updates" which are not free forever. Google Maps Navigator is free.

Posted on 29 October, 2009While it is a cool option to see, downloading maps from the google 3g network still cost money. Garmen on the other hand does not charge anything for it's service. i still think they are the best option.

Posted on 29 October, 2009That's true, especially in Chiang Mai and most of Thailand where 3G is still rare. In the near future however I foresee that [free] wireless internet will be as widely available as phone network coverage is today. Then Google will truly be dominant over the competition. I guess you can weigh it out- large initial cost of Garmin Device versus usage costs of Google device.
